Why is it I can hear people perfectly fine when I call them on a landline telephone or cell phone, but any time someone “calls in” to a radio show it sounds like Essence of Ass? Can they not just directly wire the phone into a line input on their mixer? I don’t get it.
Similarly, when I call some place and get put on hold why can I hear the person’s voice just fine but the hold music is unintelligible noise to me? I’ve heard better sounding 8kbps MP3s than that!

I’m going to guess that in contrast to the pro-audio quality they are brodcasting from the studio mics, that anything is going to sound like shit in comparison.

In situation 1 people most likely to call into a show:
1) have a cheap old flip phone.
2) are driving
3) this sounds like a question for Gizmodo.

I have no idea.
What are you driving these days? Every time I see a LeSabre driving around I can’t help but say murdersofa in my head.

For the radio call. Its going to depend on their setup and what they use to get the phone connected. Besides perfect studio mics are always going to sound awesome compared to a phone call.
As for the Hold Music, it depends on the companies IVR/PBX. We have ours turned down, but good quality music (muzak). Some companies have it turned way up with crappy quality. I have even had some with radio stations playing.

I drive a silly amount of cars. After the Murdersofa (which is still at my dad’s house) came a Civic which I then traded for Miata. Wrecked the Miata (it’s at a shop now) and bought the world’s most awful 2005 V6 mustang, which has broken down and is sitting at work, so now I am driving a 2008 Cadillac DTS that I’ve borrowed from work. Plans are currently to finish the Miata and sell the Mustang, and possibly buy something cheap and comfy for daily use. There should be happenings next week of the major variety involving sofas and murder.
